The Bautzen reservoir is a large recreation area on the northern outskirts of the city, and is very popular with locals, and for recreational and active holiday makers. A beach section on the east bank of the reservoir offers swimming, sailing and other recreation possibilities along the beach promenade. A path around the reservoir is ideal for hiking and cycling.

The Bautzen dam and reservoir was originally constructed for the supply of industrial water for the brown coal power stations further downstream, as well as for flood protection. This latter function is today monitored by the Saxony Reservoir Administration (Landestalsperrenverwaltung). The construction work for what is the second largest dam in Saxony began in 1968. Before it was filled with water, the inhabitants of the two villages Malsitz and Nimschütz had to be resettled. Since 1977, the Bautzen dam and reservoir has been in continuous operation.

The High Ropes Course offers various climbing opportunities with a mix of poles and trees. The poles are between three and eleven meters high, while the trees allow climbing exercises at six meters high. The rope slide course provides additional fun. Visitors can choose from different climbs with different levels of difficulty. Interaction and co-operation games for group development and team building can also be organised at the high ropes course.
